Children need boundaries, accountability, and correction. But the way those boundaries are delivered matters. Discipline teaches a child what happened, why it matters, and what they can do differently next time. Punishment may stop behavior in the moment, but fear, humiliation, shame, or withdrawal of affection can leave a child feeling that they are the problem rather than helping them understand that a behavior needs to change. Firm and loving parenting can exist together.
